SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – Soybean plantations grew, reaching 34.4% of the estimated area for soybean cultivation for the 2019/2020 season in the country, an 11.6% increase in comparison with numbers released last week. However, this increase was not enough to push total cultivation area numbers above the historical average for the period, as stated by consulting company Arc Mercosul this Friday in a press release.
The five-year average for the period indicates cultivation in 36% of the estimated area. According to Arc Mercosul’s report released last week, farmers had already sowed a slightly larger percentage when compared to average numbers for the period in question, despite initial delays resulting from scarce rainfall.
Works are still behind scheduled when compared to the same period in 2018, when the largest global soybean exporter had cultivated 49.2% of the estimated area for soybean cultivation in that season, which was facilitated by constant rainfall, in contrast to the current situation.
