Partnership aims to increase the share of cotton in world trade

The Brazilian Cotton Producers Association (Abrapa) has renewed its partnership with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex) to increase the share of cotton in world trade through the “Cotton Brazil” project. The association plans to make Brazil the world’s largest cotton exporter by 2030.

Over the next two years, Abrapa and Apex will devise sales strategies and protocols to ensure good practices in cotton lint shipment operations, with the focus on the sustainability of Brazilian cotton.

Brazil is the world’s fourth largest producer and second largest exporter. It is also the leading supplier of sustainable cotton lint, accounting for 36% of all cotton certified with the “better cotton” seal. According to Abrapa, even though Brazilian cotton has the same quality as American cotton, the market leader, it is sold at an average price 8% lower.  From January to June this year, Brazil exported almost US$2 million in raw cotton.
