The agricultural perspectives study of the Brazilian National Supply Company (Conab) published on Wednesday, 21st, revealed that despite the fall in crop yields, the Brazilian grain crop harvest, considering the four main products, should increase by 3,6% by 2020.
The study shows that despite a 1.7% area growth by 2020, the lowest compared to previous years, Brazil should surpass the United States and become the world leader in soybean production.
Conab points out that grain production could be around 122 million tons in the next harvest. As for corn, the volume produced in Brazil should close at 99.2 million tons next season, even with the fall of 38 thousand tons in production.
For rice, the productivity is the highlight, which has been growing with the migration to irrigated areas and the use of more technology, thus, the cereal crop harvest should be approximately 10.7 million tons. On the other hand, cotton may suffer an area reduction of 6% and almost 7% in production due to the increase of stocks and the reduction of international prices, due to this, the forecast for the harvest is 2.5 million tons.
This year, only if disaster strikes, the country should surpass the United States. It is worth remembering that the Americans are having crop problems this year, with an expected 100 million tons, a figure that can still be revised and lowered by the USDA. While in Brazil, “the prospect of 122 million tons is really a big advantage”, explains market analyst Cristiano Palavro from Arc Mercosul consulting.
